Challenges for international trade of sake

  1. Damaged easily by high temperature
  2. Sake products must be stored and transported under refrigeration, whether or not they are pasteurized.
    Appropriate temperature range is roughly 3°C ~ 5°C (37.4°F ~ 40°F), and should never exceed 16°C (60°F).
*To be precise, appropriate temperature depends on the type of sake.

    Namazake unpasteurized sake 3°C  ~  5°C (37.4°F ~ 40°F)
    Ginjo-shu made at a lower temperature 3°C ~ 10°C (37.4°F ~ 50°F)
    Other Sake other pasteurized sake 3°C ~ 15°C (37.4°F ~ 59°F)

Therefore you must arrange cold chain: refrigerated warehouse, truck and container.
FYR… if you use general-purpose dry container for ocean freight, temperature inside will easily rise more than 50°C ( 122°F ) and sake will be damaged immediately.

  3. Need to ship huge amount at one time
  4. Shipping cost accounts for a large percentage of purchasing cost of imported sake.

The more amount you ship at one time, the more you can save the cost.
If you ship more than 2,000 liters (6,000 bottles), appropriate option is FCL. Otherwise you can ship by LCL, but still there is minimum quantity.

LCL forwarders claim cost based on shipping quantity for a minimum of 1 M3 (cubic meter), which is equivalent to 960 bottles of sake. Cost will be the same even if you ship 1 case (24 bottles) only.
1 Pallet can contain approx. 1.5 M3 (≒1440 bottles), which is more cost-effective.

*Below charts show examples with standard size product, for reference only. Actual product may vary.

    < Minimum Shipping Quantity > < Shipping Cost >
    1 M3
    (cubic meter)
    (300ml) 70 case x 12 bottles
    (720ml) 35 case x 12 bottles
    (1800ml) 30 case x 6 bottles
    ≒ HK$ 8,014 ~ HK$ 11,363
    Ave. HK$ 23 per 720ml bottle
    1 pallet
    (MAX 1.5M3)
    (300ml) 105 case x 12 bottles
    (720ml) 52 case x 12 bottles
    (1800ml) 45 case x 6 bottles
    ≒ HK$ 8,014 ~ HK$ 11,363
    Ave. HK$ 16 per 720ml bottle

Planning to ship only a few cases?
The only option is Air (Speedpost/Fedex/DHL/etc.), which costs you HK$ 50 per bottle.

  5. Complicated paperwork…
  6. There are bunch of documents you have to handle.
You need to contact supplier, inland distributor, forwarder, custom, local distributor, etc…
Payment terms are complicated, including foreign transfer…
